In a bold move, the city of Albany, Oregon, has implemented a unique policy that offers a fresh perspective on traffic violations. Get ready for a twist!
Albany has decided to waive age restrictions for its traffic school diversion program, meaning that even adults can now attend traffic school to avoid a ticket on their first offense. This decision, led by Council President Steph Newton, aims to bring fairness to the system.
The new ordinance, adopted on January 14th, allows drivers with Class B, C, or D moving violations (excluding accidents and certain serious offenses) to take a traffic diversion course. This course spares them from paying fines and keeps the violation off their record, providing a clean slate.
However, there's a catch! While the ticket may be waived, participants still need to cover the cost of the class. Albany Municipal Court, which oversees traffic citations, started offering this program to all ages last October, following a push from city council members.
The municipal court judge has the discretion to determine eligibility, considering any extenuating circumstances that might make diversion inappropriate. This adds an interesting layer of judgment to the process.
But here's where it gets controversial... The implementation of traffic cameras in late 2023 has sparked concerns among some Albany residents. These cameras, placed at various intersections, including near schools, have resulted in a significant increase in speeding citations. In 2025 alone, nearly 6,300 speeding tickets were issued, with a large portion coming from the North Albany area.
And this is the part most people miss... While the diversion program has been popular, with many taking advantage of it, the exact number of participants remains unknown. Councilor Marilyn Smith inquired about this, but the answer was not disclosed.
