Trump Accepts Nobel Peace Prize Medal: Norwegian Politicians React (2026)

The decision by María Corina Machado, the Venezuelan opposition leader, to present her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Donald Trump has sparked significant outrage among Norwegian politicians, who have labeled it as "absurd." They accuse Trump of being a typical showboater, someone who seeks to bask in the glory of achievements that do not belong to him.

On Thursday, Machado honored Trump at the White House by giving him her Nobel Peace Prize medal as a gesture of gratitude for his unwavering dedication to the cause of freedom in Venezuela. Shortly thereafter, Trump took to Truth Social, expressing his appreciation for the gesture and claiming it recognized his efforts in the matter. He stated, "Machado presented me with her Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect."

In response to this event, the Nobel Peace Center emphasized on social media that while a physical medal can change hands, the title of Nobel Peace Prize laureate is not something that can be transferred or shared. This clarification came after the Norwegian Nobel Committee and the Norwegian Nobel Institute had already expressed their stance that the prize cannot be revoked or shared when Machado initially disclosed her intentions to bestow the honor upon Trump.

Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize last month in Oslo following a perilous and secretive journey from Venezuela, where she had been fighting against Nicolás Maduro's oppressive regime. The Nobel committee recognized her tireless struggle for democracy in the face of what they termed Maduro's "brutal, authoritarian state." Ironically, since Machado's award, Trump's administration has taken aggressive actions in Venezuela, including an attempted invasion and the ousting of Maduro, transferring authority to Vice President Delcy Rodríguez.

Kirsti Bergstø, who leads Norway's Socialist Left party and serves as its spokesperson on foreign policy, voiced strong criticism, stating, "This is, above all, absurd. The peace prize cannot be given away." She pointed to Trump's recent provocative threats regarding Greenland as evidence of why he is unworthy of such an accolade. She further remarked, "Trump will no doubt claim that he has now received it, but it cannot be transferred, and his repeated threats toward Greenland clearly demonstrate why it would have been madness to award him the prize."

Trygve Slagsvold Vedum, leader of the Centre Party, echoed these sentiments, asserting, "Once someone has been awarded the prize, it belongs to them. The fact that Trump accepted the medal reflects poorly on his character; he appears to be someone who takes pride in wearing the accomplishments of others."

Raymond Johansen, the former Labour mayor of Oslo and current secretary-general of Norwegian People's Aid, described the situation as "unbelievably embarrassing and damaging" to the reputation of the Nobel Peace Prize itself. He warned that Machado's actions could tarnish the image of the prestigious award and questioned the integrity of the Nobel Committee. He shared his disbelief on Facebook, stating, "I can’t believe she actually gave the prize to Trump. What on earth is the Nobel Committee going to say?"

While the Norwegian foreign ministry chose not to comment on the matter, reiterating that the Nobel Prize operates independently from the government, they directed inquiries to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which did not respond immediately to requests for clarification.

A photo released by the White House depicted Trump proudly displaying the medal in a lavish gold frame, accompanied by a message that read: "Presented as a personal symbol of gratitude on behalf of the Venezuelan people in recognition of President Trump’s principled and decisive action to secure a free Venezuela."

This situation raises numerous questions about the integrity of awards like the Nobel Peace Prize and whether political gestures can undermine the significance of such honors. What are your thoughts on Machado's decision? Do you agree with the criticisms leveled against her, or do you see her actions in a different light? Feel free to share your opinions!
